Extreme Personal Leadership
It seems to be rather easy to find individuals who purport to have high aspirations! Understandably, however, it appears to be exceedingly difficult to cull individuals from this group who have the passion and willingness to commit themselves to a plan of action towards the summit. The fact is, it requires extreme personal leadership to do so!
In the corporate world, it is not very difficult to find managers who know how to deliver outstanding short-term financial results. Likewise, it is not that difficult to identify individuals who are capable of effectively managing people for the short run.
The significant challenge is:
Identifying and developing leaders who are passionately committed and capable of consistently delivering long-term enterprise value (financial and human capital) through extreme personal leadership! These are the X-Leaders!
Of course, X-Leaders also deliver the good short-term results that shareholders expect. They go far beyond the delivery of short-term financial results to deliver sustainable, long-term financial success. However, financial results seldom reveal the fundamental character of the business that led to the results and how those results were achieved.
Good management improves financial results in the short term. However, X-Leadership improves the satisfaction of both customers and employees in the long term. To maintain improvements on the long term, most corporations need to continually improve the quality and effectiveness of their overall leadership.
X-Leaders create environments that accomplish goals through a leadership approach that creates the energy to propel organizations to heights far beyond expectations. They take action, and are seldom tentative!
Many glib statements purport to distinguish between managers and leaders. You have most likely heard, for example, that "managers are people who do things right, whereas leaders are people who do the right things." It is true that managers and leaders play two very different roles, and that they differ in what motivates them, how they think, and how they act.
From the manager's perspective, managing is a practical effort to direct the affairs of the company. Managers ask: What problems must be solved? How can we keep people contributing to the company's success?
X-Leadership differs substantially from managing. Whereas managers act to limit choices, X-Leaders strive to develop fresh approaches to long-standing problems and to open most issues to creative options. To be effective, X-Leaders project bold, bright ideas onto images that excite people. They make the impossible seem possible. X-Leaders create passion and exhilaration for the mundane. X-Leaders recognize that what may seem extreme today will be commonplace tomorrow.
Leading from the extreme means boldly taking (well calculated) big risks. X-Leaders learn how to work from high-risk positions. Such leaders consider mundane work to be an affliction. This characteristic separates them from managers, who value survival over the thrill of risk.
